Community
Outreach
Distinctive Care recognizes that the need for geriatric care
and services extends beyond the home and into the community, and has
initiated programs to support these needs through Distinctive Touch.
These programs focus on community outreach and charitable giving.
Distinctive Care partners with the Alzheimer’s Association
Greater New Jersey Chapter to offer a monthly Alzheimer’s Caregivers
Support Group for area residents who are caregivers and/or loved ones
of someone affected by Alzheimer’s Disease or related dementia.
Sophia Heftler and Bobbi Siembieda are trained by the Alzheimer’s
Association to co-facilitate meetings and provide emotional and educational
support as well as offer guest speakers on topics of related interest.
Please contact Distinctive Care at 201-857-5283 for further information.
Distinctive Care's therapy dog, Romeo, has been professionally trained
and working with Distinctive Care since his first birthday. In addition
to his work life, this Pomeranian donates his time as a regular visitor
to several local long-term care facilities to provide much enjoyed
therapy and companionship. Romeo's "pet project" is with Companion
Animal Advocates (CAA), a non-profit organization dedicated to the
welfare of companion animals within the community with the goal to
keep pets in their homes and reduce pet overpopulation in conjunction
with local veterinarians. Through the CAA's Feed a Pet program, Romeo
and Distinctive Care donate enough dog chow to the Center for Food
Action in Mahwah, NJ to feed four dogs for a year.
The Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce and The Valley Hospital host a
special day for the ladies of the community. Go Red in Ridgewood Day
is held in February during the American Heart Association's "Go Red
for Women" month. Distinctive Care participates in the day by taking
women's blood pressure and other vital signs.
Distinctive Care is pleased to be a regular contributor to the American
Cancer Society, the Alzheimer's Association and the American Heart
Association in support of their efforts with research, diagnosis and
treatment for those diseases which often affect the elderly.
Sophia Heftler has been chosen to be a member of the Editorial Committee
for Inside GCM. As a member of the Editorial Committee for Inside
GCM, the publication of the National Association of Professional Geriatric
Care Managers, Sophia will be writing and editing articles and reviewing
new publications as a member of the Book Review Subcommittee.
May is Older Americans Month. With a 2008 theme, "Working Together
for Strong Healthy Communities," Distinctive Care honored the outstanding
