Community
Outreach
Distinctive Care Geriatric Care Management recognizes
that the need for geriatric care and services extends beyond the home
and into the community, and has initiated programs to support these
needs through their Distinctive Touch program. These programs focus
on community outreach and charitable giving.
• Distinctive Care partners with the Alzheimer’s
Association Greater New Jersey Chapter to offer a monthly Alzheimer’s
Caregivers Support Group for area residents who are caregivers
and/or loved ones of someone affected by Alzheimer’s Disease
or related dementia. Our facilitators, Sophia Heftler, Christine Clark
and Marianne Terry have been trained by the Alzheimer’s Association
to facilitate meetings and provide emotional and educational support
as well as offer guest speakers on topics of related interest. Please
contact Pat Linard at Distinctive Care at 551-580-5639 for further
information or to attend a meeting. If you would like to attend our
group at The Dorothy B. Kraft Center of The Valley Hospital
in Paramus, NJ on the second Wednesday evening of each month,
please click here
for our flyer. If you would like to attend our meeting at The
Ramsey Free Public Library in Ramsey, NJ on the last Thursday
evening of the month, please click here

• Distinctive Care's therapy dog, Romeo, has
been professionally trained and working with Distinctive Care since
his first birthday. In addition to his work life, this Pomeranian
donates his time as a regular visitor to several local long-term care
facilities to provide much enjoyed therapy and companionship. Romeo's
"pet project" is with Companion Animal Advocates (CAA),
a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of companion animals
within the community with the goal to keep pets in their homes and
reduce pet overpopulation in conjunction with local veterinarians.
Through the CAA's Feed a Pet program, Romeo and Distinctive Care donate
enough dog chow to the Center for Food Action in Mahwah, NJ to feed
four dogs/year.
• Distinctive Care along with The Ridgewood
Chamber of Commerce, The Valley Hospital, The Ridgewood YM/WCA and
the Bolger Fitness Center, Van Dyk Healthcare and Home Helpers hold
a free health fair for the community each year. Health screenings,
including body mass index, blood pressure, depression screening, are
offered along with chair massages, Reiki, reflexology, healthy snacks,
and more. In 2012, Amanda Arlauskas from NBC’s The Biggest Loser
was on hand to speak about her experience with weight loss and sign
books.
• Distinctive Care is pleased to be a regular
contributor to the Mental Health Association in New Jersey, the American
Cancer Society, the Alzheimer's Association and the American Heart
Association in support of their efforts with research, diagnosis and
treatment for those diseases which often affect the elderly.
As part of our Distinctive Touch Community Outreach Program
we have developed a Speakers Bureau to share our expertise at senior
centers, community groups, houses of worship, libraries and anywhere
else where people gather. Many of these free presentations are geared
towards older adults, such as Eldercare Survival Strategies, Dealing
with Difficult Behaviors with Dementia, All About Alzheimer’s
Disease to name a few. Many others are of general interest to the
community, such as Maximizing Your Memory, Healing with Love Through
Pet Therapy, and Women’s Heart Health.
If your group is interested in scheduling a presentation
